Preserving History - What is a Scotch Collie?

American Agriculturalist, March 1893 -"Any farmer who keeps a flock of sheep, or any considerable number of other live stock, can have no more useful helper than a well-bred Collie. Such a dog attends strictly to business at all times, and, unlike some other kinds of farm help, never goes on a spree; never leaves work undone to attend a circus, nor strikes for higher wages just before harvest."

We are proud to be members of the Old Time Scotch Collie Association and The Scottish Collie Preservation Society.

We are a member and recognized breeder with the Scottish Collie Preservation Society.

The American Frontier Litter - 2020

The following video is from our 2018 Litter.

Our 2018 litter of 11 Scotch Collie puppies was conditioned to sit quietly for a treat. We accomplished this by rewarding the desired behavior with treats, eye contact, and petting but we stepped back and looked away from a puppy when it was jumping, barking, or mouthing to seek attention.

Puppy Enrichment and Puppy Culture

When puppies arrive, everyone wants to be involved! Puppies require many hours of care and attention, but the rewards are so great. The first few weeks of puppyhood are filled with opportunities for early neurological stimulation, desensitization, socialization, and establishing training foundations.   Click through to our puppy enrichment page to read about our puppy socialization methods. Learn about the time and effort we invest in each puppy to give them the best start to becoming a confident, biddable, family collie. You can also complete a Puppy Application Form so you can be added to the waiting list for your very own Scotch Collie puppy.

Go to our Puppies Page and Current litter and Planned Litter for more info and pictures.

Penny and her best buddy.

Penny is from Willow and Cody’s 2021 litter. She is such a sweet girl and has impressed us with her talents and devotion to her family.

Just thought you would want to know that last night ‘Penny’ did something she’s never done before. She alerted us to our son struggling to breathe in his bedroom. She was laying out in the living room with us and my son has had some nasal congestion which always makes it hard for him to sleep with it draining down his throat. Sometimes he’ll wake up kind of choking on it. He did that last night and all of a sudden, Penny gets up and runs to his room and then comes running back to us whining and indicating we need to follow her. I saw her go to my son’s room so I knew what she was trying to tell us, that he needed our help. Because of her we were able to get to my son quickly. She was very clearly indicating something was wrong with my son. After that she kept a close eye on his bedroom in case he needed us again.
We were so proud of her and gave her a special treat. I thought you’d appreciate hearing about her little Lassie moment.

Axel

Axel

Jeffyn Peterson - “In June of 2018, we were fortunate to discover Willow’s litter of Scotch Collie puppies. That discovery began an adventure that had a wonderful beginning with the Davis family and that continues to be a positive and enriching experience every day.

We adopted Timber, now Axel, puppy number one. I credit Becky Davis and her outstanding family team with our unqualified success in assimilating Axel into our family. From the very beginning, Becky was sensitive to our particular circumstances, especially the need to have our new fellow “fit” with our older female dog, Violet, who is known to be somewhat unsocial. Becky listened carefully to our concerns and requirements. Most remarkable, however, is Becky’s ability to assess her puppy’s personalities and attributes. She was able to recommend a puppy from her litter who is a perfect companion in every way to Violet, a feat that required a great deal of thought and a thorough knowledge of every male puppy in the litter.….” READ MORE

Finley 7 months holiday.jpg

Hi Becky,

Finley is now almost six months old and I wanted to let you know how thankful we are to have him.  From the very beginning of the puppy process to the time we picked Finley up at 10 weeks old you were the epitome of a caring, communicative caretaker!  You nurtured the puppies so lovingly and  gave them the very best start in life possible. We are so grateful to you and your family!

When my husband and I picked Finley up, we picked up a puppy who had been loved dearly and extremely well cared for.  It was a bonus that he was also housebroken!  When Finley goes out and about, he is always the object of admiration of others because he is such a beautiful, friendly dog.  I will add intelligent and loyal to his attributes too.  There are many times that my husband and I express our delight in how well-behaved he is.  In many ways, he has the maturity of a much older dog.  So, Becky (and family) please accept our sincere gratitude for providing us with such a joy in our lives.

Thank you!

Mary Beth and Pat

Finch

Finch

K.M. You should definitely feel proud of these puppies. People comment on how smart, self-possessed and calm Finch is. And I know so much of that comes from the good start you gave him. - We think he’s the most handsome, classic and all-American dog ever.

It's a good dog's life

We consider it a beautiful blessing to live in the country, with room for our children to run and explore, on enough land to share with animals. Our dogs are part of the family and mingle with the menagerie of creatures that call our farmstead home. Our dogs have filled many roles over the years. They are play companions, reassurance for a crying child, an alert to danger (real or perceived), 4-H projects, service projects, and a tutor for the meaning of commitment. Sharing life with our dogs has granted our children many lessons about kindness, friendship, and helping others.

Scotch Collies are at the heart of our farmstead. I, Becky, shared my childhood with three wonderful Scotch Collies. When I discovered there were individuals working to preserve these kind-hearted, working collie lines I was so thankful my children could also experience country life with an intuitive, intelligent canine at their side. We invite you to explore our pages and get to know us and our dogs a little better.

Hycottage Farm's Willow

Our Scotch Collies

Hycottage Farm's Willow, Reg. OTSC/SCPS- Willow is everything we could ask for in a family farm collie. She is attentive, loving, and agile. She has spunk when she needs it yet relaxes easily. She is gentle with children and knows how to regulate her activity level. She announces the presence of visitors, then greets them with a lick and a wag. She has a guardian spirit for her family and animals. In other words, she embodies the Scotch Collie temperament. Click here to learn more about Willow and upcoming litters.

Scotch Collies form a strong attachment bond with their people. Their desire is to be with you, to please you, and join in whatever activity is going on at the moment. Our experience is that they are an even tempered dog.  Our Scotch Collies have had a moderate energy level that is pushed into high gear when necessary and quickly regulated when the action is over. We believe that Scotch Collies make great family dogs.

Most of my childhood days were spent outside and usually exploring the woods around our home. Our collies went everywhere with us. They loved to play fetch, tag, chase wild rabbits and squirrels, and play in the snow by dragging the sled rope with their teeth, even with us on the sled!  Our collies were truly our best friends, the kind of dog and playmate every child dreams of.

Scotch Collie, Scottish Collie, Old Time Scotch Collie, Rough Collie:

What is the difference?

The distinction we have seen between Rough Collies and Scotch Collies is their temperament and the intensity of their working instincts and drives. We have experience with both types of Collie. There are also differences between the two in appearance. There are other traits that are unique to the Scotch Collie and many people interested in preserving these working dogs have researched and recorded their findings about the history of this remarkable breed. We encourage you to explore the links and resources to learn more about what makes Scotch Collies so special. Also, click through to our About Scotch Collie Page.

Below are some paintings from the late 1800s-early 1900s of Scotch Collies. We think Hycottage Farm's Willow is a strong resemblance to those same beautiful Scotch Collie traits.
